The One Fish Early Access Review: First Week Verdict

The One Fish early access review: mostly positive first week, real Steam quotes on friendslop co-op, camera bugs, missing tutorial, and our verdict.

8/14/2026 Last updated: 8/14/2026

Is The One Fish worth buying in its first Early Access week? The launch-week consensus is a qualified yes: the rating is mostly positive, the co-op loop is exactly what friendslop fans come for, and developer re:try patches within hours — but the bugs are real, and they show up even in recommending reviews, led by collision physics and camera lock-ups. Our quick verdict: buy if you have a group that wants a chaotic fishing party game and can laugh through jank; wait if you need polish, a tutorial, or a deep solo game.

Review note: review counts, quotes and patch references on this page were captured on August 14, 2026, two days after the August 12, 2026 Early Access launch. Early Access scores move daily, so treat every number below as a dated snapshot.

The Numbers

On August 14, 2026 the Steam store page shows an overall rating of Mostly Positive — 76% of the 60 user reviews it counts are positive. A same-day Steam review API pull across all languages and purchase types returned 71 reviews: 57 positive, 14 negative (about 80%). The two counters update on different schedules; treat both as August 14, 2026 snapshots. The score has been stable since launch: our launch-day page recorded 70 reviews and 56 positive two days in. The shape matters more than the exact total: the negative minority attacks the same bugs and thin content, not the core idea.

What Players Praise

Positive reviews cluster on four themes: friendslop co-op chaos, the chill and funny tone, the addictive loop, and the developer’s responsiveness.

Friendslop co-op. The shortest review is the most quotable. M.Foley, in full: “ONE FISH. Another friendslop hit” (August 14, 2026). Xela adds: “Dope friendslop game and the dev actually listens to the problems faced by the players. Peak friendslop will continue to play. Hope more can be added” (August 13, 2026). One Russian reviewer describes it as “a game like REPO, only about fishing” (translated, August 13, 2026) — that is the genre: janky co-op chaos that is fun because you are in it together.

Funny co-op sessions. Broker0: “My friend and I literally can’t get past day four but that’s a skill issue lol. All hail the ONE FISH” (August 13, 2026).

Chill atmosphere. CheChe: “Peak chill ah game” (August 14, 2026). Saymuru, in German: “Sehr Ruhiges und schönes Spiel. Macht Süchtig, Vorallem im Koop.” — “a very calm and beautiful game; it’s addictive, especially in co-op” (translated, August 13, 2026).

The dev listens. Xela’s quote doubles as praise for re:try, and the official record backs it: the launch post asked players to “leave any feedback or ideas,” HOTFIX 1 landed under two hours after launch, and the August 13 Small Update rebalanced events and the shop while fixing camera and scaling bugs — see launch-day.

What Players Criticize

Even recommending reviews list the same pain points, and the negative reviews are mostly “great idea, too janky, too little right now.” Five themes dominate.

Collision physics. AUnknownP. (August 14, 2026, recommending): “Collision physics need a lot of work… it’s too infuriating to play with the weird collision, it is in early access after all.” The August 13 patch already includes a fix for “fish physics acting strange,” so re:try is visibly on it.

The magnet fish. Same review: “especially with the magnet fish which… doesn’t seem to work as if it were playtested at all.” An unpredictable magnet in a game built on hauling fish is exactly the kind of bug friendslop sessions amplify.

Camera lock-ups. AUnknownP. again: “a few bugs where the camera will get locked in place.” Le0n_12 hit a related one: “i ate a big fish and i became big but my camera did not change and i could not see” (August 13, 2026). The August 13 patch notes list “player scaling not resetting after big or small mode” and “camera scenarios inside the body” as fixed — the exact bug class, and the 3-player launch-week stream shows it mid-session.

No real tutorial. Keno (August 14, 2026, recommending): “I like this game but seriously devs, we need to know what stuff does. Tutorial could help or a book you know what i mean? :3”. Rambrissot (negative, August 13, 2026): “i have no idea what to do there is no lvl telling u want to do… need a lvl to show u how to play.” The launch-week streams confirm it: crews died repeatedly before learning that reeling is spam-click, not hold. Our how-to-play and controls pages cover the basics meanwhile.

Content amount. Vamp (translated from Russian, August 13, 2026, scores it 7/10): “The game is still in early access, but it has a lot of bugs. I’ve already unlocked all the fish and hats, but that’s very little.” lightY. (negative, August 13, 2026): “its good game but its feels repetitive not much good concept but not enough content.”

Week one also brought a blue screen when joining a friend (Jellybones, August 13, 2026, still recommending), a refunded negative over shared money funding unshared upgrades (SpankyO., August 13, 2026), and saves that work for some players but not others (Vamp, same review) — the reasons the rating is Mostly Positive, not higher.

Early Access Verdict

This section is our editors’ opinion based on the evidence quoted above, not a scored review.

For the right buyer this is an easy yes. At $7.19 with the launch discount it delivers what the positive reviews describe: a silly, atmospheric fishing party game for 1-6 players where the failure states are the fun. The strongest buy signal is the developer: three official posts in two days, a same-day hotfix, and patch notes that quote player complaints back at them. You are buying into a feedback loop — the best reason to buy Early Access early.

It is the wrong purchase for three kinds of player right now: anyone who cannot tolerate bugs (collision and camera issues top week-one criticism); anyone who wants to be taught (there is no meaningful tutorial, and the biggest negative reviews say exactly that); and completionists (week-one reviewers report unlocking all fish and hats quickly).

Our recommendation: with a friendslop group, buy now and use Steam’s refund window if the jank stings; otherwise wishlist and re-check after a few patches.

How We’ll Update This Review

This is a living review, re-verified after every patch: counts and quotes are re-pulled from the store page and review API, and the checked date above changes with each pass. We track every patch on our launch-day page and the official Steam announcements hub. Watchlist: collision physics and the magnet fish, camera lock-ups, tutorial or onboarding, new fish and biomes, and the save bugs. re:try has announced no dated roadmap — “more way more content… very, very soon” is the official wording, and what lands next is not yet confirmed. When it does, the verdict is the first thing we re-test.
